Burnham Institute Orlando
Medical City in Lake Nona is going to be THE place to find top talent and scientific minds and new ideas in the country. Biomedical research facilities are all following the lead of the Burnham Institute for Medical Research. In 2005 Governor Jeb Bush proposed Orlando as the perfect location for the East coast branch of the Burnham Institute.
Bush said, “Burnham will be a godsend for Orlando and Central Florida. We are already beginning to see the benefits of the convergence of talented scientists, good infrastructure and abundant capital. My hope and expectation is that Orlando will be a markedly better place to live with the presence of Burnham.”
What is the Burnham Institute? The Burnham Institute for Medical Research is a collaborative research group with a vision to improve the quality of life and find cures for disease. The first Burnham Institute was established in La Jolla California in 1976. Currently, there are three research areas studied at La Jolla; a cancer center, an Infectious and Inflammatory Disease Center and the Del E. Webb Center for Neurosciences, Aging and Stem Cell Research.
Santa Barbara, California is home to vascular mapping and bionanotechnology branch, opening its doors in 2006. Set to open in spring of 2009, The Burnham Institute in Lake Nona will specialize in diabetes and obesity research. Daniel P Kelly, M.D. is the newly appointed Scientific Director, guiding the scientific direction of the facility. Dr. Kelly will be forming several research programs related to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and metabolism.
“I was attracted by the excitement of building a unique world-class research effort focused on the immense problem of diabetes and its complications,” said Dr. Kelly. “The power of interdisciplinary research can be harnessed in a single institute by bringing together scientists across many different fields. I look forward to assembling a team that capitalizes on the current strengths of the Burnham organization, while adding talented new scientists that drive our research mission forward. Linking discovery science to health care delivery by working with our clinical partners in the context of the developing medical city will change the future of health care.”
The Burnham Institute’s choice to build in Lake Nona may very well have changed the direction of the Central Florida economy.
“Much of the prosperity we enjoy today is the result of the visionary decisions made by the community leaders who preceded us,” said Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty. “I believe years from now, when our medical city is firmly established and world-renowned, people will look back at our resolve to bring the Burnham Institute to Central Florida as a pivotal moment in our history.”
