Lake Nona Medical City

Lake Nona is fast becoming the premiere spot for medical professionals to settle down with their families. Its proximity to Medical City makes Lake Nona the perfect location. These will create job opportunities for thousands of professionals in the medical treatment and research field.

“The arrival of these world-class institutions to Lake Nona will bring an unprecedented opportunity for collaborative research and exceptional healthcare. These initial five institutions will form the nucleus of a biomedical cluster that will substantially fuel new research and development, while creating an incredible economic engine for Central Florida,”said Rasesh Thakkar, Senior Managing Director of the Tavistock Group, the private investment company that developed Lake Nona. -source Orlando Sentinel-

Medical City is an area of Lake Nona where there are several proposed medical facilities, including research centers, medical schools and treatment centers. Medical City has planned advanced bio-medical facilities such as the Burnham Institute, University of Central Florida’s new College of Medicine and Health Sciences Campus, Burnham Institute for Medical Research’s East Coast Campus, Nemours Children’s Hospital and Research Campus, University of Florida Research Center, and Veterans Affairs Central Florida Medical Center. Medical City’s growth is attracting similar and symbiotic businesses to the area. The growth of Medical City is encouraging medical professionals, scientists and students to relocate to Lake Nona.

UCF Medical College and the Burnett College of Biomedical Science should be ready to open by spring of 2009. The Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences will be working together, along with the UCF College of Medicine. Their goal is to build a medical school that is research intensive. The vision is to create a teaching facility where cutting edge medical research will encompass the laboratory and its scientific certainties to the patient’s bedside thus creating the well rounded and knowledgeable professionals. The proposed Burnett Biomedical Sciences building will have 5 stories and 198,000 square-feet . Biosafety Level Three laboratories and a major transgenic animal facility are just a few of the features planned for this facility. Construction is underway and is expected to be completed by Spring 2009.

Also in the future of medical City is Nemours Children’s Hospital Orlando. Currently, the Nemour’s clinic in Orlando provides specialized medical services for children. "It is clear to us that the synergies to be achieved by close proximity of Nemours Children's Hospital Orlando to the University of Central Florida's Medical College, the Burnett College of Biomedical Sciences, and the Burnham Institute of Medical Research are potentially tremendous. Because the care provided in our pediatric hospital will incorporate the latest findings from robust educational and clinical research programs, alliances with like organizations will make a positive difference for the patients of Nemours as well as Orlando's growing life sciences sector," said Nemours President and CEO David J. Bailey, MD, MBA.  The pediatric healthcare campus will include a new Nemours Orlando Children's Clinic, an ambulatory diagnostic center, and research facilities as well as the pediatric hospital. -source Orlando Sentinel-

The new VA Hospital will be located across from the new University of Central Florida Medical School and close to the Burnham Institute and Nemours Children’s Hospital.

"This will be a fabulous state-of-the-art health care facility, improving access to VA's world-class services and reducing travel time for many veterans of the Sunshine State and their families," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson. The complex will include a hospital with 134 beds, a nursing home with 120 beds, a 60-bed domiciliary, a patient benefits office, to assist veteran with their needs, and an outpatient clinic. This will be the first time central Floridian Veterans will have close access to a VA hospital. There are more than 90,000 veterans in the area who will benefit from this location. Construction is hoped to begin in 2009 with completion of the project set for 2012.

The centerpiece of Medical City and the one that started it all, is the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, East Coast campus. A fateful day in August of 2006 determined the fate for this fledgling community planned by Tavistock Group, a private, global investment company. Local officials were thrilled when the Burnham Institute decided to make Central Florida, namely Lake Nona, its new home. With this endorsement, other bio- medical companies began to seek out Orlando. “Prior to Burnham’s commitment, we had five or six inquiries from biomedical companies,” said John Fremstad, Vice President of Technology Development for the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission (EDC). “We’ve had more than 100 since.”

“Our goal now is to leverage these extraordinary accomplishments into enhanced economic opportunity for our region.” Says Ray Gilley, President CEO of Orlando Economic Development Commission (EDC) “From the economic development perspective, we know that what’s ahead is a marathon, not a sprint. In an effort to accelerate this process, we have established bioOrlando, which is a coalition of healthcare, scientific, academic, government and industry partners with a shared goal – to build our biotech and life science cluster.” -Source Burnham.org-

The continued growth of Medical City will continue to encourage growth and development in Lake Nona, Eventually creating upwards of 30,000 new jobs in the area and adding billions to the Florida economy.
